High School Students Champion Collecting 2,000 Coats in Chicago
Buffalo Grove High School’s Environmental Club hosts donation day on January 18th
Chicagoland, Illinois. – January 2020 – Students in the Environmental Club at Buffalo Grove High School are supporting the environment differently this year by hosting a coat donation event on January 18th from 8 am to 1 pm.
Around 20 students participate in the Environmental Club on a year-round basis, and the students are the propelling force for the event. With over 45 students volunteering, their goal is to collect, sort, and distribute over 2,000 coats to select organizations. Community call for youth gently used and new coats.
“This distribution day is one of the first times we can truly see the direct impact we have on the community,” Buffalo Grove High School student Veronika said. “Instead of coats, we can see smiling faces. This event is all about bringing together the local community and giving back, right after the holidays!”
As a long-time partner and advocate for Button & Zipper, Science teacher and Environmental Club leader, Stefanie O’Neill is excited to help students facilitate a full-fledged coat drive and donation event for select organizations in the Chicagoland area.
O’Neil feels it is her job as an educator to be a representative inside and outside of the classroom for things she believes in. Her students are passionate and enthusiastic about the event.
“One of the greatest, lasting legacies of an educational enterprise is how we better all in our community, not just the students in our building,” Buffalo Grove High School Principal, Jeff Wardle said. “We feel fortunate to partner with such a great organization as Button and Zipper for the Coat Drive. This idea came from students, and seeing their passion is always an inspiration to me.”
Each student will have a specific role in the coat collection and sorting process to ensure there is a high quality of coats delivered to the recipient organizations and to streamline the event as much as possible. Any coat that is identified with a low level of dignity will be upcycled, following Button & Zipper protocol and furthering the environmental impact of the event.
Ira Coleman, founder, and members of the board of Button & Zipper will be in attendance of the event and are grateful for the students of Buffalo Grove High School for their commitment to this cause and the environment.
Button & Zipper is a Colorado nonprofit community coat drive initiated in 2013 to support Chicagoland and Denver metro’s low-income individuals, and families stay warm during grueling winter months. Their coat drive begins October 1st and runs through February 28th, each season.
By partnering with local leaders and companies, Button & Zipper collects, sorts, and distributes coats and jackets to those in need of warmth. So far this season, they have received nearly 8,300 coats requested from 60 + schools, agencies, and organizations. They are projected to distribute 10,000+ coats this season.
